HiLIFE Webinar: Tom Williams
Tom received his Ph.D. in 2011 from Trinity College Dublin. From 2010-2015, he was a postdoc with Martin Embley at Newcastle University, UK. In 2015, he started a research group at the University of Bristol, UK, where he is now an Associate Professor in Molecular Evolution. Tom’s lab studies the early history of life using phylogenetic and comparative genomic methods. He is particularly interested in understanding the early divergences among Archaea and Bacteria, as well as the origin of eukaryotic cells. In the talk, Tom will present some recent and ongoing work on the early evolution of the bacterial domain, including efforts to root the bacterial tree of life, understand the nature (gene repertoires, phenotypes and metabolisms) of the first Bacteria, and anchor prokaryotic evolution in geological time.
Welcome to this exciting webinar!
