HiLIFE Webinar: Sigolène Meilhac
Sigolène Meilhac is a developmental biologist and INSERM Research Director, leading since 2015 the team of Heart Morphogenesis jointly affiliated to the Institut Pasteur and Institut Imagine. Trained at the Ecole Normale Supérieure, she obtained a PhD under the supervision of M. Buckingham (Institut Pasteur) in 2003 and carried out post-doctoral work at the Gurdon Institute of Cambridge (UK), as a Marie Curie and EMBO fellow. She was recruited by the INSERM as a tenured researcher in 2006, and, with the support of the young researcher programme of the ANR in 2012, created a research group at the Institut Pasteur. She is a member of the Board of Reviewing Editors of the journal eLife. She is involved in academic teaching and student supervision, develops scientific workshops for children. Sigolène Meilhac was recipient of the Pasteur Vallery-Radot price in 2018.

Afternoon in the Science Basement: Why and how to write a grammar of an unwritten language
Description: The world’s approximately 7000 languages exhibit a dazzling range of diversity in sound, vocabulary, and grammatical structure. However, we stand to lose a great deal of this diversity as well over half of all languages are threatened with extinction by the end of this century. Many linguists are now rushing to document endangered languages while it is still possible. But how can one figure out the rules of a language without a trained teacher or a textbook? This presentation will give you the basics of linguistic fieldwork, after which you will have the opportunity to ask for more details in the Q&A session.
P.S. Any PhD student from University of Helsinki or Aalto can give a talk (any
topic), contact the email above to find out more ;)
Eteläisen syöpäkeskuksen vuoden 2021 hankkeiden esittely- ja päätöstilaisuus
Eteläinen syöpäkeskus (FICAN South) järjestää vuoden 2021 hankkeiden esittely- ja päätöstilaisuuden pe 4.3.2022 klo 12-14:15 Teamsissa.
Vuoden 2021 hankehaussa myönnettiin hankerahoitusta kahdeksalle kliiniselle yhteistyöhankkeelle.
Hankkeiden vastuuhenkilöt esittelevät lyhyesti hankkeet. Kysymyksille on varattu aikaa kunkin esityksen jälkeen. (event language is Finnish)

HiLIFE Webinar: Dahai Luo
Structural biology of chikungunya virus RNA replication
Dahai received his Ph.D. in 2010 from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He studied at Yale University as a postdoctoral research associate between 2010-2013. He then joined the newly established Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine in Sept 2013 and received his tenure in 2019. His laboratory is interested in understanding how infectious viruses, such as dengue, Zika and Chikungunya viruses, infect humans and how our body’s defence system fights back, with the ultimate goal to develop effective antiviral and vaccination strategies to win this battle.
ABSTRACT: Many positive-sense RNA viruses, such as Dengue, Zika, Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), and the pandemic SARS-CoV-2 viruses, are serious human pathogens that cause severe infectious diseases to the whole world. Yet specific antivirals and vaccines are not readily available to any of the viruses. Limited understanding of the virus replication process is one of the many factors that hinder effective therapeutics development. My lab is interested in understanding the fundamental principles governing viral RNA biogenesis among different viruses. Here we take the CHIKV RNA replication process as the model system to study the molecular mechanisms of viral RNA replication and transcription. I will provide an update of our recent structural biology work on the CHIKV RNA replication process.
