Wihuri Research Institute Special Seminar by Dr. Bong-Ihn Koh

Functional specialization of cranial tissues: Lessons from blood vessels

Speaker: Dr. Bong-Ihn Koh Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine, Münster

Dr. Bong-Ihn Koh’s research focuses on understanding how the bone marrow microenvironment regulates hematopoietic stem cell self-renewal and fate. Although aging, chronic inflammation, and other insults compromise bone marrow function, it is not known whether different bone compartments exhibit distinct microenvironmental properties and functional resilience.

Dr. Koh will present his recent discoveries on the functional specialization of blood vessels in the skull bone marrow and the dura mater of the neighboring meninges. His findings reveal that the skull bone marrow unexpectedly undergoes lifelong expansion involving vascular growth, which results in an increasing contribution to total hematopoietic output and is largely protected against major hallmarks of aging. The underlying mechanisms of this process, as well as the rapid and complete vascular regeneration potential of the neighboring dura mater, will be discussed. He will also provide an overview of unique vascular channels, which physically connect these tissues, facilitating specialized immune functions in various pathophysiological conditions.
