Exercise and the ageing brain: findings from the Generation 100 Brain substudy

Anette Arild is a medical doctor currently writing her doctoral thesis on white matter hyperintensities in the 5-year long randomised controlled trial ‘Generation 100’ at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway. (Link to first published paper from 2022 on the effects of 5 years of exercise on WMH). She plans to do a postdoc at NTNU to discover more about the general older population and the brain.

Wihuri Research Institute Special Seminar by Dr. Anu Suomalainen-Wartiovaara

Why diseases manifest in tissue-specific manner? Metabolism in spotlight

Dr. Anu Suomalainen-Wartiovaara is Academy Professor at the University of Helsinki and Chief Physician at the Helsinki University Hospital. Her lab focuses on clarifying molecular basis of tissue-specificity in disease manifestations. They focus on mechanisms how different mitochondrial-elicited signals modify whole-cellular, organ and systemic metabolism and result in disease manifestations sometimes in the brain, other times only in the liver, muscle or heart. They have described major metabolic stress responses that modify cellular metabolic homeostasis in a tissue-specific manner and, importantly, have shown that these responses can be targetable by metabolic bypass or rewiring therapies. The overarching goal of ASWlab of mitochondrial medicine is to use basic biology tools and metabolic knowledge to clarify molecular pathogenesis and identify and test potential treatment targets.

Biostatistics drop-in workshop

Are you a researcher needing support with any statistical aspect of your work? The Biostatistics Consulting Service here at Meilahti Campus holds drop-in workshop sessions every other week to answer smaller questions about your analysis - solving a particular problem, how to get started, etc. We provide service in Finnish, English and Swedish.

The next workshop is on Wednesday 1st February, at 13:00-15:00 in Biomedicum 2B, in the Olohuone on floor 6. Come whenever you can. Note that you may end up waiting a while for your turn, especially early on in the session. We aim to spend no more than 15 minutes with each customer.

Bring:

  • your computer
  • your data
  • your questions

and we biostatisticians will be on hand to help and guide.

Registration is not required, but you can help us prepare for your questions by filling in this form. The workshops are open to any researcher at the university's Medical Faculty, HUS or FIMM.

For more in-depth questions, please book a one-on-one consultation session using this e-form where we will have time to go into more detail.
