HiLIFE webinar / Biomedicum Helsinki seminar: Sara Zanivan

CAF metabolism drives pro-metastatic remodelling of the tumour microenvironment

Sara leads the Tumour Microenvironment & Proteomics lab and is head of the Advanced Technology Proteomics Facility at the Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute in Glasgow, and is Professor at the Institute of Cancer Sciences at the University of Glasgow. She graduated in Biology at the University of Torino and received her PhD degree in Complex Systems for Quantitative Biomedicine for work on cell-extracellular matrix adhesion at the Candiolo Cancer Institute in Torino, Italy. Before joining the Beatson, she was post-doc at the Max-Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Munich where she developed mass spectrometry-based proteomic technology to study cancer signalling in vivo and in 3D models. Her research aims to understand the molecular mechanisms through which cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) alter the tumour microenvironment to influence cancer aggressiveness and resistance to therapy. CAF metabolism and their crosstalk signalling with other cell types are major research focus, and the overarching goal of her research is to find ways to target CAFs in combination with other anti-cancer therapies to improve survival of cancer patients. Sara’s group also develops mass spectrometry proteomic approaches, including new methods to study cell metabolism in vitro and in vivo, at cellular and systemic level.
