HiLIFE webinar / Viikki Monday Seminar: Kristen Ruegg: Genomic tools to track migratory birds across space and time

Genomic tools to track migratory birds across space and time

Kristen Ruegg is an Associate Professor at Colorado State University where she is developing innovative genetic-based tools to conserve migratory birds in the face of climate change and other stressors.  Ruegg is also the co-founder and co-director of the Bird Genoscape Project whose main goals are: 1) to create comprehensive, visually impactful, migratory flyway maps for birds that can be used to motivate conservation efforts across geographic and political boundaries, and 2) to map the potential for bird populations to adapt to climate change. Ruegg’s presentation will introduce how genomic data can be used to track individuals’ annual inter-continental movements and how building ‘biobanks’ of DNA samples through the Bird Genoscape Project is helping us to understand key factors underlying population vulnerability in migratory birds.

If you are curious about applying your expertise in population genetics and biobank data beyond your current research paradigm or interested in adopting new tools to monitor moving populations of wildlife, welcome to this exciting seminar!

PhD researchers and MSc students should contact rose.thorogood@helsinki.fi to join for a funded-lunch at Kartano from 11.45.
