HiLIFE webinar / Viikki Monday Seminar by Professor Sven Gould
Professor Sven Gould, Institute for Molecular Evolution, Heinrich-Heine-University
Düsseldorf,Germany will give a talk in the HiLIFE seminar series on April 28th at 13.00-14.00.
The title of this seminar is "The impact of endosymbiosis on life" .
Coffee and pulla will be served in front of the
lecture hall 30 minutes prior to the seminar.
Sven is interested in the big questions of eukaryogenesis. The eukaryotic cell is characterized by unparalleled compartmentalization, but where did the compartments come from, where are they going, how are they targeted? His research team analyses the cell biology of eukaryotes and their compartments on the ground of biodiversity and under the umbrella of evolutionary trajectories. In their research, his team uses a wide variety of organisms across the tree of life to provide empirical evidence for predicted concepts. His team have identified new protein sorting motifs, entire translocation machineries, and have provided evidence for the first protein to be translocated across five biological membranes.
Sven is also a passionate science communicator, explaining the complexity of biology in an
entertaining manner at schools and museums, on German television and radio, and notably the BBC World Service. In the summer of 2023, Sven set up an exhibition at the Botanical Garden of Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf that received such positive feedback from the general public that he is now compiling an illustrated book of the event for distribution.
Welcome to this exciting seminar!
