HiLIFE Webinar: Martin Embley

Eukaryotic Genomic Origins, Parasites and the Essential Function of Mitochondria
Martin obtained a PhD at the University of Newcastle and then taught at North East London Polytechnic before moving to the Natural History Museum to establish a DNA lab working on eukaryotic evolution. In 2004, he moved to the Newcastle University where he is Professor of Evolutionary Molecular Biology in the Biosciences Institute. His research over the past 30 years has focused on three main areas:
· The investigation of early eukaryotic evolution using genomics, cell and molecular biology.
· Computational evolution, particularly the use of phylogenetics to explore gene and genomic origins.
· Use of the minimal mitochondria (mitosomes and hydrogenosomes) of parasitic microbial eukaryotes like Trichomonas and Microsporidia, as models for investigating the essential functions of mitochondria.

Martin is a member of EMBO, a Fellow of the Royal Society and a former ERC Advanced Grant holder. More information about Martin, his work and publications can be found in his University webpage and google scholar
