HiLIFE webinar / Viikki Monday Seminar by Robin Franklin: The emergence of myelin - a critical event in vertebrate evolution

The emergence of myelin - a critical event in vertebrate evolution
Robin Franklin is a Principal Investigator at Altos Labs Cambridge Institute of Science and Honorary Professor in the School of Biology at the University of Cambridge, having previously been Professor of Stem Cell Medicine at the Wellcome-MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute. His laboratory has made many pioneering discoveries on the mechanisms by which adult CNS progenitors replace lost oligodendrocytes, describing how their function declines with aging and how this can be reversed. He is a Fellow of both the Academy of Medical Sciences and the Royal Society, as well as the recipient of the 2017 Barancik International Prize for Research Innovation and the 2021 King Faisal Prize for Medicine.

Welcome to this exciting seminar!

iCAN science seminar on Biology as a compass: multimodal profiling and treatment prediction in ovarian cancer with Dr. Francis Jacob

Dr. Francis Jacob from the University Hospital and University of Basel will give a talk “Biology as a compass: multimodal profiling and treatment prediction in ovarian cancer” in the iCAN science seminar series on

Host: Assist. Prof. Anniina Färkkilä, MD PhD

If you are interested in meeting Dr. Jacob during his visit, please contact the host at anniina.farkkila@helsinki.fi.

There is going to be a student lunch before the seminar. For more information, please contact the student host Ziqi Kang at ziqi.kang@helsinki.fi

Francis Jacob is a molecular biologist with a degree from the Technical University of Dresden, Germany. He earned his PhD in Cancer Biology from the University of Zurich and completed his postdoctoral training at the Lowy Cancer Research Centre, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia.

Since 2012, Francis has led various research projects, and more recently, he has been co-heading the Ovarian Cancer Research group at the Department of Biomedicine, University Hospital Basel, and University of Basel, Switzerland. With over 15 years of experience in ovarian cancer research, his work focuses on understanding the role of aberrant glycosylation in cancer, the mechanisms of ovarian cancer metastasis to the omentum, and advancing personalized oncology through innovative approaches using patient-derived samples.

The presentation will highlight Jacob’s research group’s journey, which originated in biomarker research, toward understanding cancer cell dissemination and our efforts to optimize treatment regimens for patients with epithelial ovarian cancer.

Welcome!  And a reminder for those coming onsite: come early for a cup of coffee or tea and pulla.
