Helsinki Organ-on-a-Chip meeting

We are excited to announce that registration for the 1st Helsinki Organ-on-a-Chip Meeting, taking place on Monday, 11th of December at Biomedicum 1 (Haartmaninkatu 8, Helsinki, Finland), is now open! Seize the opportunity to listen to and discuss current advances in the field of organ-on-a-chip and alternatives to animal testing. While we hope that as many of you as possible can join us at Biomedicum to facilitate active discussion, we understand that not everyone may be able to attend in person. Therefore, for reach and sustainability reasons, we have also established an opportunity for remote participation.

Please register for the event by completing the registration form. Registration for the onsite participation is open until Friday 24 November 23.59 (UTC +2) and for the online participation until Friday 8 December 23.59 (UTC +2).

The preliminary program can be viewed from our website.

We also invite you to present your progress in the field through oral or poster presentations. To this end, please complete the abstract submission form by Friday 24 November 23.59 (UTC +2)A selected number of abstracts will be chosen for short oral presentations and all are welcome to present posters, pending space availability. Abstract submitters will be informed of decisions by 1st of December.

ONCOSYS Special Seminar

Speaker: Prof. Benjamin Schuster-Böckler, Principal Investigator, Big Data Institute / Ludwig Cancer Research.

Title: The mutagenic side-effects of epigenetic regulation

Abstract:
Epigenetic marks on DNA are required for life, due to their role in gene regulation, immunity, DNA repair and many other cellular functions. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that epigenetic regulation incurs a cost to the cell in the form of an increased mutation rate at certain positions. Most prominently, CpG dinucleotides - the site of epigenetic DNA methylation in most eukaryotes - frequently mutate into TpG, both in germ- as well as in somatic cells. This phenomenon was first reported more than 40 years ago, but recent observations in cancer genome sequencing data have shed new light on the potential mutagenic mechanism. Here, I will present some of our work trying to disentangle the role of DNA replication, DNA damage and DNA repair on the accumulation of mutations in CpG dinucleotides.

Biostatistics drop-in workshop

Are you a researcher needing support with any statistical aspect of your work? The Biostatistics Consulting Service here at Meilahti Campus holds drop-in workshop sessions every other week to answer smaller questions about your analysis - solving a particular problem, how to get started, etc. We provide service in Finnish, English and Swedish.

The next workshop is on Wednesday 13th December, at 13:00-15:00 in Biomedicum 2B, in the Olohuone on floor 6. Come whenever you can. Note that you may end up waiting a while for your turn, especially early on in the session. We aim to spend no more than 15 minutes with each customer.

Bring:

·       your computer

·       your data

·       your questions

and we biostatisticians will be on hand to help and guide.

Registration is not required, but you can help us prepare for your questions by filling in this form. The workshops are open to any researcher at the university's Medical Faculty, HUS or FIMM.

This is the last session before the Christmas holiday period. We will restart again on 17.1, then every second week.

For more in-depth questions, please book a one-on-one consultation session using this e-form where we will have time to go into more detail.
