CancerBio Summer School Special Seminar: Mikala Egeblad

Heroes and villains: Immune cells regulating metastasis

Professor Mikala Egeblad obtained degrees in Medicine (B.S., 1993). Human Biology (M.Sc., 1996), and in Cancer Biology (Ph.D., 2000) from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. She did her dissertation research under the mentorship of Dr. Marja Jäättelä at The Danish Cancer Society. Her postdoctoral training was performed in the laboratory of Dr. Zena Werb at University of California, San Francisco. There, she began developing intravital spinning disk confocal microscopy to understand how the microenvironment influences tumor progression, focusing on innate immune cell responses and protease-mediated extracellular matrix remodeling. She came to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in 2009 and established a research group that studies how the tumor microenvironment contributes to therapy resistance and metastasis, primarily focusing on the role of inflammatory cells. In 2014, she was promoted to Associate Professor and in January 2021 to Professor.
