Deciphering the origins of human hematopoietic and leukemic stem cells

Prof. Mikkola’s lab focuses on defining gene regulatory and niche derived mechanisms that regulate the development and self-renewal of human hematopoietic stem cells (HSC), and how these mechanisms are dysregulated during stress and disease.

She will talk about mapping the stepwise development of human HSCs using single cell and spatial omics technologies, and dissecting regulatory mechanisms that control HSC self-renewal. Her talk will also illuminate how understanding “stemness” in the hematopoietic system can help track the initiation and progression of leukemias.
