Biostatistics drop-in workshop

Are you a researcher needing support with any statistical aspect of your work? The Biostatistics Consulting Service here at Meilahti Campus holds drop-in workshop sessions every other week to answer smaller questions about your analysis - solving a particular problem, how to get started, etc. We provide service in Finnish, English and Swedish.

The newt workshop is on Wednesday 11th September, at 13:00-15:00 in Biomedicum 2B, in the Olohuone on floor 6. Come whenever you can. Note that you may end up waiting a while for your turn, especially early on in the session. We aim to spend no more than 15 minutes with each customer.

Bring:

·       your computer

·       your data

·       your questions

and we biostatisticians will be on hand to help and guide.

Registration is not required, but you can help us prepare for your questions by filling in this form. The workshops are open to any researcher at the university's Medical Faculty, HUS or FIMM.

The autumn's following sessions are planned for 25.9, 9.10, 23.10, 6.11, 20.11, 4.12 & 17.12.

For more in-depth questions, please book a one-on-one consultation session using this e-form where we will have time to go into more detail.

Annette Horstmann / Big questions in neuroscience and current limits of knowledge

Brain vs. Food 0 - 1: Cognitive Aspects of Obesity
Associate Professor Annette Horstmann, University of Helsinki
Annette Horstmann, PhD is Associate professor at the Department of Psychology, University of Helsinki. She investigates the neurobiology of obesity, and multiple factors that determine how much an individual eats and whether they develop obesity. Individual differences in behavior, governed by cognitive processes and traits like reward-sensitivity, reinforcement learning or executive functions, might make it more difficult to navigate in today’s complex obesogenic environment. Eating and choice behavior can be acquired and shaped throughout the lifespan but are presumably influenced by underlying genetic predispositions as well. With her research, her lab aims to identify neurocognitive profiles that can explain what factors contribute to certain eating habits on the individual level. Ultimately, their research aims at helping prevent the progression and treatment of maladaptive eating habits and obesity by developing individualized intervention strategies. Towards this aim, they draw upon multiple scientific disciplines such as biology, psychology, neuro- and cognitive sciences, medicine, nutritional sciences, and mathematics.

Special Seminar by Adj. Prof Kirsi Ketola

Cancer Cell Plasticity to Evade Hormonal Therapies

Prof. Kirsi Ketola:  Cancer Cell Plasticity group leader, Adj.prof in Molecular Medicine, and Director of Cell and Tissue Imaging unit at the University of Eastern Finland.

Summary of research:
Our studies focus on understanding the molecular mechanisms of cancer cell plasticity and prostate cancer treatment resistance, including neuroendocrine transdifferentiation and cellular neuroplasticity programs. The aim is to identify novel therapeutic targets and biomarkers for neuroendocrine prostate cancer and to restore treatment-resistant cells to an antiandrogen therapy-sensitive state. The research uses genome-wide and cellular imaging methods, patient-derived organoids, and blood samples to validate findings. Recent discoveries include the neuroplasticity protein DPYSL5, which regulates antiandrogen enzalutamide resistance, chromatin reprogramming, and neuronal cell phenotype in prostate cancer, the Fanconi anemia pathway, FANCI, which plays a role in carboplatin resistance, and a stem cell transcription factor that activates cancer stem cells and resistance in androgen-independent prostate cancer. Inhibiting these cellular plasticity programs could potentially target aggressive forms of cancer.
