Special semiar by prof Hong Qian

Unraveling leukemia niche contribution to therapy response and relapse – opportunity to identify new treatment options

Speaker: Prof. Hong Qian , Karolinska Institutet

Summary of the talk: The seminar will focus on leukemia microenvironment/niche contribution to the progression and therapy response of acute and chronic myeloid leukemia (AML and CML). The molecular and cellular alterations of the leukemia niches as well as the functional impact of the altered niche factors on leukemia-initiating stem cells will be presented/discussed during the talk. The talk will specifically discuss the role and molecular mechanism of two representative niche factors extracellular matrix molecule Lama4 and a chemokine CXCL14 in the proliferation and chemo-response of AML and CML-initiating stem cells.

Special seminar by prof Michal Schwartz

Sadly, the current geopolitical situation made it impossible for Professor Schwartz to travel from Israel to Finland. She will therefore give her talk remotely. However, in anticipation of vivid discussions after the presentation, we strongly encourage both junior and senior scientists as well as students to attend the live streaming in Biomedicum, lecture hall 2.

Helping the brain to repair itself  in Alzheimer’s disease by Immunotherapy
Professor Michal Schwartz
Professor of Neuroimmunology at the Weizmann Institute of Science

Professor Michal Schwartz's work in neuroimmunology has encompassed a wide range of pathologies in the central nervous system including injury, neurodegeneration, mental dysfunction, and aging. She coined the term protective autoimmunity and demonstrated the role of immune cells such as macrophages and T cells in spinal cord repair. She also identified specific brain areas for 'cross talk' between the CNS and the immune system. This cross-talk is important for recruiting immune cells and maintaining a healthy brain, and the disruption of this cross-talk can play a role in brain aging and neurodegenerative disease. She also showed this role in pregnancy and fetal brain development, where immune disruption in the mother can be linked to neurodevelopmental disorders in their children. Another major focus of her work has been on repurposing cancer immunotherapies to treat neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.
