Special Seminar by Dr. Emilia Peuhu

It is a pleasure to welcome you all to a Special Seminar by Dr. Emilia Peuhu, University of Turku

Title: Exploring human breast development and cancer progression with 3D imaging

Emilia Peuhu, Ph.D. is a Sigrid Jusélius Senior Researcher and Docent (Physiology) at the Institute of Biomedicine, University of Turku, Finland. She earned her M.Sc. in animal physiology and Ph.D. in cell biology in Finland, followed by postdoctoral training at Northwestern University (USA) and at University of Turku. In 2019, she established her independent research group supported by an Academy of Finland Research Fellowship. Her research focuses on the role of tissue architecture and cell interactions in breast biology and early tumor progression. Dr. Peuhu has authored 41 peer-reviewed scientific articles and received several awards, including the Medix Prize for best international publication in biomedical research in Finland. In 2023, she was named one of Finland’s Top 100 Health Influencers by Mediuutiset.

iCAN Science Seminar with Assoc. Prof. Arjan Diepstra

TitleThe tumor microenvironment in classic Hodgkin lymphoma: A unifying pathogenetic framework.

Bio: Arjan Diepstra is a hematopathologist and associate professor at the University Medical Center Groningen. His research is embedded in the Cancer Research Center Groningen. His main research interest involves malignant lymphoma, in particular Hodgkin lymphoma, with a strong focus on interactions between tumor cells and the microenvironment. In his PhD thesis “Classical Hodgkin lymphoma: population based studies on HLA and EBV (2007)” he discovered that the HLA system is intricately involved in Hodgkin lymphoma susceptibility, pathogenesis, and prognosis, and publishedthese findings in the Lancet and Journal of Clinical Oncology. He secured three Dutch Cancer Society grants to do functional follow-up studies on these findings. His areas of expertise are: immunology, tumor cell biology, association studies and molecular diagnostics in pathology.

In addition, Dr. Diepstra is a program leader within the Cancer Research Center Groningen, the chair of the local ethical committee of the UMCG Pathology department, and the chair of the national HOVON pathology facility (HOP). International activities include chairing the translational research workstream of the Lymphoma group of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancers (EORTC), chairing the Pathology Working group and being a coordinating committee member of the Interlymph consortium, a secretary function in the dutch working group hematopathology and authoring multiple editions of the WHO tumour classifications.
