Chemical leak in Biomedicum Helsinki 1 building resolved
A chemical leak in Biomedicum Helsinki 1 building 3rd floor B-wing cold room was noted at 10 am today based on a strong inhalatory irritation and smell. The fire department emptied the building.
The leak was due to a broken bottle of acryloyl chloride, which on contact with water/moisture releases corrosive fumes of hydrogen chloride and aqueous hydrochloric acid. Inhalation causes irritation and potentially chemical burns to eyes and respiratory tract. Following removal of the chemical and ventilation the building was opened at 1 pm. Identified exposed personnel underwent immediate medical checkups locally.
